the chinese art system, derived from the colligrapgy system,

it was always among the chinese social elites from the mornachies to the cabenit officers...all the way down to country chiefs...the chinese system to promote officers, the unique HR system, was through the screen tests, recognized values system, and rolled out generations of elites from the same value system. however, if you look at the chinese calligraphy and thus art history, you would find the change in values and the phylosophies which in turn impacts on conceptual values on arts. (海归论坛 www.haiguinet.com)
but overall, since the chinese visual arts was essentially among the small circle of social elites from creation to consumptions, from circulations to critics...it was able to become conceptual, at least 1000 years ahead of the western "contemporary conceptual arts" basically because it was all among the highly educated people of the same value system (海归论坛 www.haiguinet.com)
therefore, you would have the chinese art works with compositions typicallly left blan rooms for imaginations
as versus the western compositions typically fill all space up (海归论坛 www.haiguinet.com)
then let's look at the industry. the chinese works circulate among the elites at the costs only few could afford who would pay to collect. (海归论坛 www.haiguinet.com)
the western industry, once moved into industrial era, had the new social group to enjoy arts and the commercial merchanism of art galleries/saloons set in market place for a reason with needs to support. (海归论坛 www.haiguinet.com)
in thewestern world, ballet was create dby the royalties and practiced and performed by all nobles. so were the music compostions and even to a degree the performances. it was never part of non-high society until lte 1800's. but for some reason, they did not go into the visual arts, as it was in china. so there you have it. for western visual arts, it started, after the early ages, as a media to promote the religions that ruled the western world along with the mornachies. it was a means as a hired gun. (海归论坛 www.haiguinet.com)
the chinese system was more about self expressions. but yet, they would have loved to be appreciated as well. (海归论坛 www.haiguinet.com)
this is why, your perspective was a bit too simplified to derive to such a generalized asnwer. (海归论坛 www.haiguinet.com)
