my own definitions of arts:
the creative expressions of original thoughts/perspectives by members of human societies of different times and of different individual cultural backgrounds, consist of own symbles and interpretations, to communicate as a language.
(this is very impulsive, not well thought through yet, but will have to do for now)
the functionalities of arts: arts to communicate, intended by the artists or not, shall impact on the social and cultrial surroundings with the artists' own perspectives. Therefore
while the impacts varies between individual viewers, such impacts produced by arts are of the functionalities of their own.
thus, we would extend to social functionalities, cultiral functionalities.
an example: some art works could be well deployed as decor to furnish houses, that is onw function.
other art works are only displayed at museums, where people are to think and derive at certain conclusions. a thought process would be the result of the communicating functions
of such art works.
you would think about how do like the art work, while you take the time and pay for the ticket and walked in front of it.
then you may even ask yourself why or why not...
there you are communicating, may or may not work with each art works you passed by. because lack of mutual cultiral ground, the dialogs become monologs.
