to follow hedge fund news/trend. Read books and do research on the industry. There are dedicated websites such as hedgefund.net. It helps if you have quantitative background.

Just like in any other industry or career, working hard and smart will help get you farther.

Hedge fund investment does not have to be risky, it all depends on the strategies. Buying short term quality commercial paper is relatively safe, but may not get the desired returns. But that's life. Also finding good funds to take your money may not be easy, and even they're willing, you may find the management fee and performance fee overwhelming. There are a few oversea markets that allow hedge fund listed ETF trading, so retail investors can have easier exposure.

Good news is that it's not hard to start one youself: you can form a LLC and convince your family and friends (no lies though) to let you invest their money, as long as they're accredited investors and you don't take the money and run and don't be clever in accounting, you buy and sell stocks there you have an operating hedge fund. But wait, don't quit your day job yet, since it may take a while to get enough mangement fee to feed yourself, and pay for the infrastructure to operate. They also may not stay with you for long, unless you perform.

So the gist is that it's out there but not for the faint-hearted.
