i was taught the following rules
1. always follow the heart: if nothing touchs you, you aren't gonna touch anyone with your works
2. literature is an art of languages, need to pay a lot of attentions so that not all characters speaking through the same mouth:the authors's
3. it is coming from life but bigger than life.
therefore i do not really care much about the formalist styles as i used to, not any more. if you look at qian zhong shu's wei cheng, the only contemporary chinese literature work i really appreciate (i would hate to say forget the rest as i spit on their works, because they are what they are and they were just acting as themselves and speaking out to the croawds loving them. i am not one of those people, and i would not pretend i was...i would love to appeal to more, while i know it is not possible! i have decided that for my works, i cannot lose myself just to get more people to like it)
guess what? frankly i think qian's wei cheng is a very bad novel for its structure, but it is a great work because of the characters so lively, and the social contexts if offers to described the times in the background. i love it, but i spit on his techniques. he never had much and i doubt he actually cared to have one! he just went with his heart and his feelings.
now if you read his other books like guan zhui bian....you would doubt this is from the same author...
just how i feel about those other writers in your list, some i can stand others i really would not want to read at all! not meant to upset anyone out there as famous wirters: just because i do not like them does not change the fact that they are loved by most.
