In America your clients purchase your products/services for the good quality, competitive price, excellent after-sale customer services/warranty, on-time delivery, etc. It is a norm that you invite your clients out for lunch when you are visiting them annually. As a matter of fact I often try to avoid the free lunches because I don't want any of my vendors/suppliers having any clout over me in regards to future pricing negotiations and other business tranactions.
The way I am dealing with my major distributors is that once a year I or my assistant pay them a visit and also send them a questionaire asking for their opinions, suggestions, their planning or changes, anything we can improve for the coming year.
If you insist sending some gift, a Christmas card, or a nice calendar with your company logo/name on it, or a nice pen with your company name.
The bottom line is: generally speaking most American businessmen are afraid of oweing you something for nothing.
