and not for consumers.
Sun built its business on its servers. It hopes that everything comes to depend on the server. The best thing that can happen for Sun is that everyone just have a dumb terminal. Maybe a few graphics enhancements.
Just imagine this, are you confident storing your personal data on a server instead of on your own harddrive? Your big idea about an invention that might make you billionaire, your secret pictures from your affair, the porn movie you got through illicit means.
Say you're a developer writing the next generation software. You need to run development tools, go through your code, debug it, test-run it. Are you comfortable if this is all done on a remote machine monitored by other geeks? What if some of those geeks steal the idea, and worse, your source code?
Aside from privacy and security issues, what if your internet connection is down? Do you even have the phone number to call?
The issue is, computing power is not everything. Computing power is so cheap that I don't have to subscribe to broadband Internet to get it. Data, by itself, is a giant force to reckon with. Data needs to be stored in any way a consumer wants, and not mandated by some giant company that it be stored on a server.
The network computing idea has been around for so long and it never took off. There is a reason to it. That is, democracy. Democracy in computing for the masses.
Sun/IBM or whatever company promoting the NC idea wants to build a server-based kingdom where they're king. We consumers want a democracy.
Power to the masses.
