BEIJING (AFX) - China's M2 broad money supply rose 19.2 pct year-on-year to 30.35 trln yuan at the end of January, the People's Bank of China (PBoC) said -- the biggest monthly rise in almost two years.
The seasonally-adjusted M2 growth rate at end-January was 23 pct, according to a statement posted on the central bank's website.
The unadjusted growth rate -- which was higher than both the figure of 17.6 pct recorded at end-2005 and 14.1 pct at end-Jan 2005 -- was last surpassed at end-Feb 2004, when M2 grew 19.4 pct.
The latest figures are substantially higher than the PBoC's targeted 16 pct rise in M2 for full-year 2006, but the bank attributed the 'relatively rapid growth' in money supply to an increase in cash in deposits and circulation during the Lunar New Year holidays.
HSBC economist Qu Hongbin noted that household demand for money will have risen as a result of holidays which began on Jan 29 this year. Last year they started on Feb 9.
'(The M2 figure) looks quite strong, but I think we have this Chinese New Year distortion, so therefore I don't think you can read too much into it,' Qu said.
The central bank also said in the statement on its website that narrower M1 money supply increased 10.6 pct from a year earlier to 10.74 trln yuan at the end of January.
That compares to the PBoC's goal of 14 pct growth for 2006. M1 money supply grew 11.78 pct year-on-year to 10.73 trln yuan at end-2005.
M0, which measures cash in circulation, was up 22.1 pct at 2.9 trln yuan at end-January. At end-2005, it had increased 11.94 pct to 2.4 trln yuan.
The statement also said that new bank loans in January stood at 565.8 bln yuan, compared with 280.9 bln a year earlier.
Outstanding loans at the end of January reached 21.17 trln yuan, up 13.1 pct from a year earlier, it added.
Outstanding deposits in both yuan and foreign currencies were up 17.5 pct year-on-year at 30.35 trln yuan, 1.5 percentage points higher than a year earlier.
Outstanding deposits in yuan were up 17 pct at 29.14 trln yuan year-on-year, 0.3 percentage point higher than a year earlier.
Household savings in both yuan and foreign currencies were up 19.1 pct year-on-year at end-January, 7.2 percentage points higher than a year earlier.
Household savings in yuan rose 21.1 pct from a year earlier to 14.8 trln yuan, 9.2 percentage points above the increase last January. No separate figures for foreign currency savings were provided.
In the statement, the PBoC said it put 527.9 bln yuan in cash into circulation in January, 273.2 bln yuan more than a year ago.
The central bank said the increased injection of cash in January was normal considering the holidays.
