visual art is about visual. but what is visual?
you thinkyou "see" something but you don't. what you see as visual does not really physcially exist. it is what picked up by your sensors (eyes) and projected to the back of your brain and processed there. the "image" is generated there at that step fo the process.
think about your dream:
you see things without color or really definite shapes
you hear things without hearing real sounds...
that means your brain is drawing on your memories and coming up with the projected situations.
is it video, image, audio...all of above or none of above, both are right
technologies are resembling what we think we see and hear,
and it does get there. we watch TV. what is TV: streams of signles cheating on our sensors scanned in certain intervals designated to facilitate the cheating process.
so we know we want to please ourselves with things stimulate
and visual arts do that.
well now, contemporary arts is more about conceptual. in the societies today, we are sub into multiple social groups of different cultural background (i do not mean ethinical backgrounds) and we have different conceptual to the point one common icon seize to function as universal.
this is where conceptual come to play: you go to an isolated society and look at thwta they have to express themselves, you either go WOW how did they come up with that or you go Shit what is that! (because you failed or refused to understand simply because you cannot relate to or identify)
so today, just by showing off with impeccable techniques you will impress almost no one. it is the originalities that counts.
the traditional oil paintings are appreicated with the trained eyes who accepted the same training and thus standards.
you need to be able to appreciate the rich grey tones of a sophysticated oil painting by artist of great skills. i can do that because of my extensive training. what about those who never did any practice? simply give up?
or in case of ballet: you would know if the audience is an educated one in a ballet performance because they would know where to applause as appropriate interruption. if it is quiet all the way through only hear applause at the end of performance. you know this is a bunch of people never or rarely come to ballet. the educated audience accpeted the standards and only judge classical ballet with techniques and then to talents. for classical ballet, naked talents does not help much, simply because the french kind already defined the art by every single move, almost like a sicence.
today, the arts are different, the human societies are different.
