bought out by Brown Co. and then Brown was purchased by JPM Chase. It is a part of Chase now. I use Brown on a daily basis. However, it tends to charge you more commissions if you trade stocks. For instance, if you try to sell 5000 shares of aaa company, if you don't put in an order for "all or none," you will bee the order like 200 shares sold here and 400 shares sold there, and if you try to change the order due to market price changes, then you will end up paying a lot more commissions. They charge $10 for each limited order, no matter one share or 5000 shares.
Personally I don't know Beijing much, but for Shanghai, yes. You may start look for one but don't commit yourself too soon. Hopefully the timing before Chinese New year will be good. Normally right after the Chinese Festival the housing market jumps. On the other hand, the price is depressed before the New Year. Of course if everyone expects RMB will be revalued before the yearend, which I don't, then the housing price will be up sooner.
I like to see some day one rmb = one US$, so I may have enough money to buy a house in SF  Hope you find this helps.
