Since Reagan's administrations, Republic presidents continued to do couple things: deregulation and tax cutting.When the bank failures like epidermic swap across the whole industry, government and Fed wrestled to revise and pass 700B bailout plan over 2 weeks. In reality, you can't shape the American Economy in one night or one month
In the old world, nations grew fat and lazy, until they collapsed under their own weight. But it was not to be American story, at least right now. It is too simplistic to blame greed for the financial crisis. The fault is a broader human trait: the reluctance or inability to consider the downside of a situation that has so many attractive features. Banks used to be the gyms of soul: where will lend your money if you can prove that you don't need it. The virtue died with baby boomers. In current situation, people will/ should rediscover or re-evaluate the peace and value that prudence brings. It takes certain lessons ,sustainable education, or leadership for people to understand that ownerships aren't the necessary honors and saving isn't for suckers.
I am an optimist by nature: The morning of American is more likely to come again, if we prepare for midnight. No panic and no worry, but preparation.
