前不久我和学生写了一篇论文送去一个本学科的顶级刊物发表,当然这种论文都是需要反复修改的,4个评委给了一些意见,要求我们对里面的一些观点再作一些说明。我让学生(这些都是中国顶级名校的硕士,TOEFL,GER接近满分,学习理工,毕业以后直接去美国名校留学的人)写一个rebuttal(反馈意见),结果我看了他们写的,基本不能用。不是英文的问题,是根本抓不住写的重点,而且写的东西不符合老外的思维,争论文章没有反驳的力量。所以我没有办法,牺牲自己宝贵的旅游的一小时时间,重新写了一个以下的rebuttal. 当然我写的东西,现在看来还是有一些表达和语法上的问题,不过如果Jessica能这么思维,再多的文法问题都可以去美国工作或者在中国的外企当一个中层管理。
这个能力是与老外睡一辈子都学不会的,因为绝大多数老外也不会。
Rebuttal:
As one reviewer pointed out that the Persona is a very current and relevant topic. We fell that our contribution in this area is significant because:
1: We proposed using clustering analysis method to find the pattern in the user data. Before our work, the big questions that anyone will ask are: How did the author know how many Persona is appropriate? Why is it not three (four or any number) of Personas? Our methodology answers this question by using a scientific method to identify the user patterns. The identification of the typical users is crucial in the Persona creation process. None of the previous Persona creation paper touched this area. Our methodology filled the void of this area and provide a more scientific and rigorous basis for Persona development. Our approach is different than Sinha’s approach. Sinha has used (2003) the PCA method to reduce the dimensionality of the attributes which has little to do with identifying the similarity between the users.
2: We use a case study to illustrate how the Persona creation can be created with a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. Although it looks like an experience report, our main contribution is not a mere replication of others method in our project. We proposed a new methodology in the Persona creation. The case study is used to provide the support for our method.
We know that our sample size is rather small with only 24 participants and the number of measured dimensions is 27. That is exactly why we wrote this paper: to provide a piece of evidence and to give the practitioners and scholars a foundation for future discussion and exploration in Personas and their creation process. We clearly outlined each step that we went through so that other researchers are able to recreate our result. They can also use our methodology in other cases.
It is unfortunate that our images are small. This is a dilemma facing each of the practitioners in the field: that is how to balance the knowledge sharing with the confidentiality restrictions. Although we are not allowed to show the content of the exact Personas, we have shown the format of the Personas and exact steps that we used to create them.
In our case study, we were hired as consultant to create the Personas. In the beginning, we were presented with two Personas from the company. However, no one seemed to know exactly how they were generated. We used our proposed methodology to generate the Personas. It just happened that our results: the two Personas looked similar to the two Personas that were given to us. Although this may not sound like a big improvement, it does have its significance. It is not the result but the process that we went through to generate the result that is significant.
We presented the result and the methodology to the company executives last summer and our client was convinced by the result. We are confident that the Personas will provide a solid base for any of their future product development.
The grammatical errors can be corrected. Some of the recent work such as Sinha and Pruitt (2006) can be added in the next revision once the paper is accepted.
