AVP, VP in Investment banking are, frankly, considered junior ranks for staff with an official ti<x>tle.
Most banks have a two track ti<x>tle systems - a rank ti<x>tle and a responsibility ti<x>tle.
It is the custom to emphasis on responsibility ti<x>tle in all public communication. (See two examples from UBS and MS)

Rank ti<x>tle (Junior to Senior) - AVP->VP->Associate Director->Director/Principle->Executive Director (ED) ->Managing Director (MD).
Responsibility ti<x>tles are normally divided in subregion/country/asset class/biz unit
Examples:
Director/Japanese Equities Research -> MD/Asia Equities Trading -> MD/Global Head of Investment Banking
Responsibility carries much more weight in terms of real authority with in the bank.
It is quite misleading (intentional or not) just mention the rank ti<x>tle w/o the responsibility ti<x>tle
I know MDs who are individual contributors with no authority or budget v.s. Director carrying a senior responsibility ti<x>tle with 100M burget and hundreds of staff under management.
In terms of "牛人", when I retired from investment banking in 2000, one of my close friends from HK (in his mid 30s) at UBS is MD/Head of Global Quantitative Research.
He worked with Gary Brinson (another 牛人) on some of the ground breaking research in Asset Allocation theory.

This statement will be laughing stock on Wall Street if it published in US. You are expected to make Director in 5 years, or your are CIO (Career is over) at the bank.
