The Icefields Parkway (or in Canadian English, Promenade des Glaciers ), is a magnificent, scenic highway l<x>inking Jasper and Lake Louise, through the heart of the Rockies. It parallels the Continental Divide, traversing the rugged landscape of the Canadian Rockies. It was completed in 1940 and named for features such as the Columbia Icefield, which is visible while traveling the parkway. The splendor of the 230 km Parkway can not be overstated. It ranks as one of the world's ultimate drives. Its unending succession of huge peaks, immense glaciers, iridescent lakes, wild-flower meadows, wildlife and forests – capped by the stark grandeur of the Columbia Icefield – is absolutely overwhelming. Although about a million people a year make the journey to experience what the park blurb calls a "window on the wilderness", for the most part you can go your own way in relative serenity. You just got to do it once in your life.
The Columbia Icefield is an icefield located in the Canadian Rockies, astride the Continental Divide of North America. The icefield lies partly in the northwestern tip of Banff and the southern end of Jasper National Park. It is about 325 km² in area, 100 to 365 metres (328' to 1,197') in depth and receives up to seven metres (23 feet) of snowfall per year. The icefield feeds eight major glaciers, including (Ref. Wikipedia):
Athabasca Glacier
Castleguard Glacier
Columbia Glacier
Dome Glacier
Stutfield Glacier
Saskatchewan Glacier
Part of the icefield, the Athabasca Glacier, is visible from the Icefields Parkway. The Athabasca Glacier has receded significantly since its greatest modern-era extent in 1844. During the summer months visitors to the area can travel onto the glacier by hiking up or in the comfort of large "snowcoaches" - a special Bus can drive up to the icefield.
