I have posted a message here couple months ago, detailing one offer for me to move back to Shanghai and head a marketing operation there. The original post is here: https://www.haiguinet.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?p=974738
Just want to let you gusy know the follow-up, as a way to appreciate so many people expressing their opinion to help me with the decision.
Finally, after tough negotiation with company in US and operation directors in China, I made up my mind to go back to Shanghai for a two-year-contract.
The new deal is much sweatened for compensation and my role & responsibility in Shanghai branch. I will head a largely independent business unit in Shanghai, including marketing, sales and operation, and responsible for its P&L in Great China region. This unit is not existing in US, and only created for China market and mainly for me. Generally speaking, I will be just one step away from MD for the business. The opportunity excites me very much, and makes me to dive into the unknown. I treat it as a gamble for a chance of unlocking my potentials.
The touch thing is about my family. Through so many speepless nights talking about the impact on our family and future, my wife eventually (and tentatively) agrees to let me have a try in Asia. The plan is that my kids will not come with me, and my wife will fly back and forth to take care of me and my kids. We will also try to maintain everything in US untouched. I really feel sorry for her and for sure will miss my kids. I will try to see if I can find a good job for my wife so that I can convince her to re-start her career in Shanghai. Anyway, that will be a tough two years ahead for my personal life (hope not as tough for my career).
My office will be in PuDong, and I will also setup my home there. The company will organize a one-week long company-paid look-and-see trip (mainly sightseeing for free kind of thing as sweatener) in Shanghai. I will formally kickoff in Shanghai Jan 07, and will travel extensively to Shanghai during this year.
Hope we have some chance in future to meet in Shanghai and have some social event there.
