barely saw his original works in a dedicated series, until now. his works are now in houston. at least looking at the ones curated by the curator, i thought it is very disappointing, after all the fuss about him on the contenporary american visual art history.
his arts were in the category of self taught. but view his workd al i feel was the word kitsch.
he put his stuff on canvas, but color or compositions are all very raw, which is not a prob by itself. what was original about him were those words. but interestingly enough, why bother to put on canvas? it was great as grifiti.
he was also supposed to be a musician since he participated in band(s) activities
thought he would have been a better artist if he was born in the rapper's times.
today so many good songs are phylosophically deep, and those rappers, if you could understand the african american english, offer very strong contexts of the times in their part of the world....
when people asked basqiat what was his medium, as he inroduced himself as artist, his answer was "extra large"
not sure if ganging around andy warhol dried him up or he was not too original and talented to begin with. for me, it was not one of the best viewing experiences
the movie he played in, "downtown 81", in the meantime, was an A plus work by the director! truly talented. strongly recommend those who never viewed the movie to locate it and enjoy
